Week 1: A Commitment to Unity — Affirming Our Statement of Faith

  1. Josh shared two stories — hearing bios read for people he'd never seen at church, and reading obituaries of "members" he'd never met as a pastor. Have you ever experienced confusion like this about what it means to belong to a church? Why does having clear, shared commitments help avoid that?
  2. In Acts 2:41-42, the early believers devoted themselves to four things: the apostles' teaching, the fellowship, the breaking of bread, and prayer. Which of these four feels most natural for you right now, and which one do you most need to grow in?
  3. The sermon gave three reasons doctrine matters: truth matters to God (Jude 3), true doctrine leads to life (Titus 1:1-3), and false doctrine can lead to death (2 Timothy 2:14-18; 4:1-4). Which of these three hit you hardest, and why?
  4. We're told to read Scripture with "the intensity of the Bereans" (Acts 17:11) but also with "apostolic gentleness and charity" (2 Timothy 2:25). Which side do you naturally lean toward — precision or patience — and what would it look like for you to grow in the other?
  5. The sermon closes with Jesus' parable of the wise and foolish builders (Matthew 7:24-27): "It's not enough that we have correct doctrine if it doesn't produce a correct life." Where is there a gap right now between what you believe and how you're actually living? What's one step you could take this week to close it?
