Esther 4-6: "For Such a Time as This"
Opening Prayer
Ask God to help your group see His providence at work in both the extraordinary and ordinary moments of life, and to give you courage to respond faithfully to His calling.
1. Mordecai reminded Esther of God's faithfulness and promises (Esther 4:14). How does remembering what God has done in the past strengthen us to act in faith today?
Read: Deuteronomy 30:1-3; Daniel 9:1-3
- Share a time when remembering God's past faithfulness helped you trust Him in a difficult situation.
- Are there promises of God that you need to cling to right now?
2. Esther called the Jewish people to fast and pray before taking action (Esther 4:15-16). What does this teach us about the relationship between prayer and obedience?
Read: Joel 2:12-13; Nehemiah 1:4
- Why is it tempting to act without first seeking God?
- What role should prayer and fasting play when facing major decisions or crises?
3. Esther said, "If I perish, I perish" (Esther 4:16). In what areas of life is God calling you to courageous obedience, even when the outcome is uncertain?
Read: Daniel 3:17-18
- What fears most often keep you from obeying God?
- How can our group encourage one another to step out in faith?
4. Esther did not try to solve everything at once but simply took the next faithful step. What does it look like to trust God with the results while being faithful with what He has placed in front of us?
Read: Esther 5:1-8
- Are you prone to passivity ("God will do it, so I don't need to act") or self-reliance ("It all depends on me")?
- What is one small act of obedience God may be asking of you this week?
5. Compare the attitudes of Haman and Mordecai. What warnings do we receive from Haman's pride and offense, and what encouragement do we find in God's eventual honoring of Mordecai?
Read: Esther 5:9-14; Esther 6:1-13; Deuteronomy 8:17-18
- How can pride, bitterness, or taking offense distort our perspective?
- Have you ever had to wait a long time for God to bring justice or recognition? How did God sustain you during that season?
Closing Challenge
This week, identify one situation where God is calling you to trust Him more fully. Commit to bringing that situation before the Lord in prayer and then taking one step of faithful obedience.
Closing Prayer
Pray that God would give each member the courage of Esther, the humility to resist the pride of Haman, and the faith to trust God's providence even when He seems hidden.
