Home Group Discussion Questions — Listen to Him (Luke 9:28-36)
- Read Luke 9:28-36 together aloud. What details stand out to you on this read-through that you might have missed before?
- The sermon points out several parallels between this scene and the Old Testament — a mountain, a cloud, a voice, Moses' radiant face, the "exodus" language, verse 9:35 “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” - Which of these connections surprised you most, and why?
- Scripture tends to build a case for someone's greatness by comparing them to people who were already great, rather than tearing the earlier figure down. How does this change the way you read passages where Jesus is compared to Moses, David, or others?
- The Hebrew word shema combines hearing and obeying into one word — there's no separate word for "obey." Does thinking about "listening" this way change how you'd describe your own relationship with Scripture?
- Where in your life right now is there a gap between what you've heard from Jesus and what you're actually doing?
- The "fruit test" comes from Luke 6:43-45 and Galatians 5:19-23. Is there an example of something you're currently listening to (a podcast, a teacher, a habit, a pattern of thought) that is producing good fruit? Anything that is producing bad fruit?
- Is there a teaching of Jesus you've quietly decided doesn't apply to you, or isn't realistic? Do you think you should reconsider that position, and what would actually obeying it look like this week?
