Acts 17:16-41

  • Understanding Your Audience
Paul tailored his message to the Athenians by referencing their altar to an “Unknown God” and quoting their poets (vv. 23, 28). How can we better understand the beliefs and values of people in our own community (e.g., coworkers, neighbors, or friends) to share the gospel effectively?
Prayer Prompt: Ask God for wisdom to engage others with sensitivity and clarity, making the gospel clear without compromising its truth.
  • Confronting Idolatry
Paul was deeply distressed by the idols in Athens (v. 16) and called the people to turn from them to the one true God (vv. 29-30). What modern “idols” (e.g., materialism, self-reliance, or cultural trends) do you see in your life or around you, and how can we turn from them to give God singular allegiance?
Prayer Prompt: Confess any idols in your heart and ask God for strength to worship Him alone.
  • The Day of the Lord
The sermon emphasizes the coming “Day of the Lord” when Jesus will judge the world in righteousness (v. 31). How does the reality of this future judgment shape the way you live today, and how can it motivate you to share the gospel with others?
Prayer Prompt: Thank God for His promise to make all things right and pray for boldness to share the hope of Christ’s return.
  • The Resurrection as Proof
Paul points to Jesus’ resurrection as proof of God’s coming judgment (v. 31). Why is the resurrection central to our faith, and how can we communicate its significance to those who, like the Epicureans and Stoics, may find it strange or hard to believe?
Prayer Prompt: Praise God for the resurrection of Jesus and ask for opportunities to share this truth with others.
  • Responding to the Gospel
The Athenians responded to Paul’s message in different ways: some mocked, some were curious, and some believed (vv. 32-34). How have you responded to the call to repent and follow Christ, and what steps can you take to live a life of daily repentance, as the sermon encourages?
Prayer Prompt: Ask God to help you and your group live repentant lives, abandoning sin and clinging to the cross for forgiveness and guidance.
